Alcohol Treatment Therapy

Alcohol Treatment Therapy

In America, nearly sixty five thousand people receive alcohol treatment every day. This a number that increases over the time, that´s why treatment centers increase in number as well, but they also develop innovative techniques and therapies due to new and demanding patients with different needs requesting for assistance. Nowadays there are several therapies available for people wanting to stop the addiction to alcohol. While some treatment centers claim to have the successful therapies in their facilities, the actual success rate is very difficult to measure, because of the lack of information. What is true is that every patient has a specific pattern of behaviors and habits, and there are no fixed or standard processes to provide solutions for everybody´s case. An effective program should treat patients in a case-by-case basis.

Alcoholic dependency will determine, in many cases, what program better suites an individual´s needs, but a regular treatment will include therapy and medication in its process. Medications will be use to address the physical effects of alcoholism on the patient, a detoxification would be one of the first steps, depending in the process chosen. Detox involves more than just stop drinking alcohol, some withdrawal symptoms might appear during this process and professional and medical observation will be needed.

Some forms of therapy are:

Group therapy: Alcoholism builds a social barrier between alcoholics and their families and friends; their negative behavior and habits isolate them from the real world. Group therapy will be helpful to gain self-confidence and support by listening other´s experiences and sharing their own thoughts about this addiction. Alcoholics will know that there are more people in the same situation.

Individual therapy: A big part of alcoholism is related to emotions, beliefs and mental health. A good program will address the root causes of the alcohol addiction to find out what´s the course of action for a successful recovery. It can be achieved in individual therapy, where the specialist will have the opportunity to know from the patient what is causing his behavior. All that information can be analyzed taking advantage of the private environment that may make the alcoholic feel comfortable to express clearly the cause of the problem.

Aftercare: Alcoholics tend to think that they can control their alcohol consumption and, therefore, don´t need any type of help. Even though convincing an addict to go into rehab could be a very hard task, it´s not the most important part. That´s right, in these days looking for assistance is taken as a smart decision, and sometimes people will not present opposition. But what´s really important is staying sober after finishing the rehabilitation process. Some specialists think that after individuals completed the recovery process, they are done with their job, but the truth is that alcoholics need even more support after taking their lives back from rehab. Individuals will have to face the same tempting situations everyday, so they will need that support afterwards to stay sober in the long term.
