Alcohol Rehabilitation

Alcohol Rehabilitation

The most  effective and powerful way to stop the alcohol dependence in an individual is Alcohol Rehabilitation. There are programs which main objective is to get deeper in why a person became addicted to alcohol and treat the issues involved at the source.

Alcohol Rehabilitation programs help people to overcome their psychological and physical addiction.  These are more than just a temporary solution; most successful programs follow a well-structured process, based on areas such as counseling, detoxification and aftercare.

There are many myths and stigmas associated to alcohol dependence, even though this topic has evolved in many ways, there are people still believing that this is a type of disease, some others believe that alcoholics are simply possessed by some sort of evil forces.

The truth is that in our days, fortunately, science has shown us that addiction to alcohol is not only related to physical aspects, as a matter of fact, studies have found that traumas, emotions and fundamental beliefs are closely related to this dependency.  But, it might be very difficult to find the root of this problem if it´s based on emotions and beliefs, right? Well, here is where the therapy comes into play. Psychologists have developed effective methods to determine the real nature of alcohol dependency and its treatment, modern programs are found in specialized centers employing these methods.

The first step of almost any rehabilitation program is counseling. A therapist or counselor will conduct several sessions with individuals to educate them about alcoholism, how to develop skills to prevent it, and also will help them to determine what situations trigger this behavior. There are two types of therapy or counseling sessions: individual and group therapy.

Group therapy is great for getting support from other people recovering from the same problem. This is the perfect opportunity to talk to others about own experiences, tell stories and basically eliminate the barriers of isolation created by alcoholism.

In individual therapy, the counselor or therapist has the opportunity to approach the problem directly in face to face sessions, this is the ideal opportunity to explore the causes of the addiction in a private way, focusing all the attention to the specific case to find effective solutions.

When a person has gone through the rehab process and has finished it or at least has reached an advanced level, it´s time to take his or her life back and go back home again. This is not as easy as it seems, as individuals will find the same (or more) challenges as they did when started the rehab process. Some challenges are:

Stress: After being absent for some time going through rehab, individuals can face some stressful situations trying to catch up with their job, homework, etc.

Habits: Visiting the same places or getting together with friends could make old habits to come back.

Because of these challenges, and many others, aftercare is very important to provide alcoholics some additional support such as counseling, to give them the opportunity to share what they´re experiencing.
